Eduardo De Filippo, in the last period of his life, decided to translate Shakespeare’s romance, The Tempest, from English to seventeenth century Neapolitan dialect. The translated play was then published in the volume Scrittori tradotti da scrittori [Writers translated by writers] in which Eduardo De Filippo gave reasons why he had chosen The Tempest. First of all, the Italian playwright, Shakespeare likewise, was attracted by the magic, tricks and supernatural beings on stage. But he had chosen the play also for ideological reasons: one of the main topics in the romance was tolerance. Although Prospero has been treated in an undignified manner by his brother, the King of Naples and Sebastiano, he does not seek revenge but their repentance....
